The Token Institute explores how technology is reshaping the arts and culture sector. We bring together creatives, technologists, and thinkers to engage meaningfully with the ethical, economic, and creative questions defining our increasingly technical era. Innovation without reflection is reckless. Reflection without experimentation is stagnation. Token exists between the two.

The 2026 Conference was a cultural conversation built around collections of short films created with artificial intelligence tools. audiences purchase tickets to juried blocks of shorts designed to explore a central theme, aesthetic, or question emerging from the intersection of cinema and machine learning.
The conference was on September 13th at Chicago’s Wirtz Center. Researchers, technologists, artists, and critics joined for conversations, talks, and panel discussions that examine how AI is impacting authorship, storytelling, labor, and imagination itself.

Meet Tyler Token. He's a squid. And Token's biggest fan. For a creature that's spent millions of years looking like science fiction, the age of AI isn't all that surprising.

What is Token?
The Token Institute was created by three Northwestern University graduate students in a dense atmosphere of technological excitement and discomfort. As conversations around AI increasingly dominated the cultural landscape, we found ourselves asking broader questions about the relationship between technology, creativity, and society—and where artists belong in shaping that future.
We recognize that new technologies create both possibility and risk. They can open new forms of expression, lower barriers to entry, and reimagine how we create and experience culture. They can also threaten physical craft, authorship, meaning, and the human relationships that make creative work matter. And AI is only one part of a much larger conversation about how emerging technologies are reshaping our lives.
What unites us isn’t consensus, but a collective drive to understand and grapple with our changing technological era. We believe the most meaningful conversations happen at the intersections of disciplines, where artists, technologists, thinkers, and the public can challenge one another’s assumptions. Rather than arguing in circles, we began asking a different question: what happens when you give these ideas a stage?
The Token Institute was born from an impulse to create room for nuance in a landscape addicted to hype. Through a large-scale ideas conference exploring the intersections of arts and technology, we bring together diverse perspectives to examine not just what new technologies can do, but what they mean for how we live, create, and connect. We don’t claim to know where the future is headed. Instead, we believe experimentation and storytelling can help us navigate the unknown (and imagine more thoughtful futures together).
